SOCMINT (social media intelligence)

Definition

Intelligence derived from social platforms: profiles, connections, reach, and amplification patterns, collected lawfully and analysed for investigative or protective purposes. Social network analysis turns individual posts into a picture of relationships and coordination.

In practice

The value of SOCMINT is rarely in a single post. It is in structure — who connects to whom, which accounts move in step, how a message travels and who amplifies it. A follower list is data; the pattern inside it is intelligence.

Public availability does not switch off data-protection law. In the EU, social data about identifiable people is personal data, so SOCMINT is done under a documented lawful basis, and deceiving your way into a private account is off the table.
